Glossary of Terms

To help you understand us better, we have compiled a small glossary of terms. It will help you out sorting out your project needs and will ease your ordering process

Balance
Hardware attached to the side jambs of newer replacement windows. It provides the tensional force that makes the sash operation easier. When this piece of hardware fails, the sash of the window does not stay up.
Bevel
Slanted cut in the edge of the mirror or glass that is usually done for decorative purposes. A bevel edge makes the egdes of the glass or mirror reflect more light, therefore giving the piece a more elegant look.
Block and tackle
Hardare attached to the side jambs of a window that helps with the sash lifting operation. It is basically a spring with a system of pulleys enclosed in a rectangular metal housing.
Bronze tint
Brown like colored glass or mirror. One of the stardard colors for glass and mirrors.
Bronze finish
Brown like colored coating in aluminum tubing. Aluminum tubes are available in three standard finishes: aluminum or clear, bronze and black.

Chrome finish
Chrome coating that is usually applied to bathroom hardware.

Door check or closer
Hidraulic hardware that is mounted on a door transom or below the saddle to assist people with door closing operation.
Double Hung
A window with an upper and lower sash that are usually operable and slide up or down.

Glass
Hard and transparent material that is made by fusioning Silicon, sand and other materials into crystals.
Glazier
A professional that works in the glass industry.
Glazing
Work done by a professional glazier.

Insulated glass unit
A type of glass that consists of two glass panes separated by an insulating empty area. Because of this layout, this type of glass provides thermal isolation between interior and exterior areas.

L

Laminated glass
A type of glass that is made of two thin glass panes held together by middle thin plastic layer. It provides great security because if the outer glass panes break, the middle pastic layer can still hold the glass in place.
Low E glass
A type of glass with a special coating that makes it resistant to UV. rays. It is usually used in insulated glass units to make them more energy efficient.

Mirror
A hard, bristtle material with a high reflective property. It is a made of glass materials plus coat of a reflective metal.
Mirror Mastic
A tar like compound used to glue mirrors to walls.

O

One way mirror
Also called translucent mirror or two way mirror, it is a type of tinted glass with a reflective coating on one of its sides. The coat allows some light to pass thru, but most of the light is reflected back.

Putty
Glazing compound used to mount glass on wooden sashes.
Polished Edge
Edge work done on the edge glass so that the edge has an elegant finished look.

Single Hung
A window with one fixed sash.
Safety glass
Any type of glass that can be used for safety purposes. Usually this type glass breaks, but it will not become loose easily.
Shoe (window shoe)
A plastic piece of hardware that provides support for the sash window pins. It slides up and down inside the window jambs, and it connects the sash to the window balance.

Tempered glass
A type of glass that has gone to a hardening process. This process increases the cohesion of the crystal particles in the glass giving the glass greater resistance to scratches
